Why More Buyers Are Looking Outside the City

In 2025, more buyers are looking outside the city—and not just for lower prices. The shift to rural and cottage-country living comes down to space, lifestyle, and value.

You want more room. A bigger yard. Maybe a workshop, garden, or even pond access. In the city, that kind of space is either too expensive or impossible to find. Outside the city, it’s standard. Buyers are getting larger lots, detached homes, and quiet surroundings—often for less than a two-bedroom condo in town.

The pace of life is another factor. You might be tired of traffic, noise, and feeling crowded in. Smaller communities offer a slower, more manageable rhythm. Many buyers say they didn’t realize how much stress the city added until they left it.

Remote work has made the move easier. If you don’t need to commute daily, the appeal of a long driveway and treed lot outweighs the convenience of being ten minutes from the office. Some buyers are still commuting a few days a week—but they’re willing to trade the drive for better living conditions.

There’s also a growing interest in being closer to nature. Walking trails, ponds, ocean views, ATV access—rural homes offer what city living can’t. That matters more now. People want quiet mornings, privacy, and space for their kids or pets to roam.

Inventory outside the city can be more diverse too. You’ll see everything from newer builds to seasonal cabins to older homes with character. It gives you options, especially if you’re flexible about location.

Affordability still plays a big role. Property taxes tend to be lower. Homes often come with extras—garages, sheds, basements—that would cost thousands more to add in town.

If you’re feeling priced out of the city or simply ready for a change, it makes sense to look beyond it. Cottage-country isn’t just for weekend escapes anymore. For many, it’s becoming home.
