Back to School Starts Before Summer Ends

It’s amazing how fast it happens.

One day the kids are sleeping until noon, the backpacks are buried in a closet, and nobody knows where the lunch containers went. The next day, school starts in less than two weeks and everyone’s scrambling.

A little preparation now can make those first few weeks much less stressful. Whether your children are starting kindergarten, heading into high school, or leaving for college, there are a few simple things you can do before summer ends.

Get sleep back on track

Summer routines have a way of drifting. Later bedtimes and lazy mornings are fun while they last, but they can make the first week of school miserable.

About two weeks before school starts, begin moving bedtime and wake-up time earlier by 15 to 30 minutes every few days. The adjustment is much easier when it happens gradually instead of overnight.

Find the missing school supplies now

Every family has that drawer full of pencils, rulers, calculators, and notebooks. Before buying anything new, see what you already have.

Then make a list of what’s actually needed.

Shopping before the last-minute rush usually means better selection and less stress. If your child’s school has already released supply lists, use those instead of guessing.

Clean out backpacks and lunch bags

You never know what survived the last day of school.

Empty every pocket, wash lunch bags, check zippers, replace broken water bottles, and make sure backpacks still fit comfortably. If something needs replacing, you’ll have time to shop without feeling rushed.

Create a homework space

It doesn’t have to be a dedicated office.

A quiet corner of the dining room, a desk in the bedroom, or even one end of the kitchen table can work well. The important part is having good lighting, a comfortable chair, and a place to keep school supplies together.

When everything has a home, homework is easier to start.

Make mornings easier

Think about your biggest morning frustrations.

Is everyone searching for shoes?

Are lunches packed at the last minute?

Do coats end up scattered around the house?

Small changes can save surprising amounts of time. A basket for hats and mittens, hooks near the door, or a family calendar in the kitchen can help mornings run much more smoothly.

Get everyone involved

Back-to-school preparation doesn’t have to fall entirely on the parents. Encourage older children and teenagers to get involved by organizing their backpack, sorting through last year’s supplies, checking what they still need, or getting their room ready for the new routine. It gives them a chance to be more independent while taking a few things off your own to-do list.

Check technology before it’s needed

Computers have a way of choosing the worst possible time to stop working. Instead of finding out the night before the first assignment is due, turn everything on while there’s still time to fix a problem. Check that chargers haven’t disappeared over the summer and that the device is ready to go.

Ease back into routines

Nobody expects the whole household to switch from summer mode overnight. Start easing back into the school routine a little at a time by having meals on a regular schedule and getting everyone used to earlier mornings again.

Don’t forget the home itself

Back-to-school season is also a good reminder to tackle a few household jobs that often get forgotten during summer.

Clear out the entryway, organize the mudroom, label storage bins, donate clothing that no longer fits, and make room for backpacks, lunch bags, and sports equipment before they begin piling up again.

A more organized home often makes the entire school year feel a little less hectic.

The goal isn’t perfection

No family starts the school year perfectly organized.

The goal is simply to make the transition easier.

Taking care of a few small tasks before summer ends can reduce stress, save time during busy mornings, and help everyone settle into the new school year with a little more confidence.

When the first day arrives, you’ll be glad you started before the countdown reached zero.
