You’ve sold your home. Now you need to move—and probably sooner than you’d like. Start with a simple timeline. Count back from your closing date and block out time for packing, booking movers, and cleaning. Give yourself a buffer for anything that takes longer than expected.
Then, start clearing things out. Go one room at a time. Set aside what you don’t use or want anymore. Less stuff means less to pack—and less to move. Sell, donate, or toss—no point in packing what you won’t use.
Label every box by room and contents. Keep a separate “essentials” box for your first night in the new place—things like chargers, toiletries, and basic tools.
Contact utility companies early. Set a disconnect date for your current home and a connect date for the new one. Do the same for internet and mail forwarding.
If you’re hiring movers, book them as soon as you can. Weekends and month-end dates fill up fast. If you’re doing it yourself, start gathering boxes and supplies now.
Measure furniture and entryways at your new place. You don’t want surprises on moving day.
Before you hand over the keys, do one last clean. Wipe down surfaces, empty closets, and check the garage. Leave any manuals or keys that the new owner might need.
Moving after selling your home takes planning but doesn’t have to be a mess. Stick to a schedule, pack with a system, and take it one task at a time.
